If you’re interested in having remote access back to your home workstation, than look no further – the Google Chrome Remote Desktop extension works great, is blazing fast, and super easy to install.
And keeping with one of the prevailing themes of this blog that “free is always better” it is of course free of charge and has no licensing restrictions that I’m currently aware of. While not as full featured as TeamViewer, it does take the cake here for being absolutely free, as opposed to the $600 price tag for business workstations. Comparing it to the well-known LogMeIn offering, which is also another free remote access add-on, it simply smokes it in terms of usability and speed.
To use the Google Chrome Remote desktop extension, you simply need to install it and perform some minimal setup. Pick up a copy here, and I’ll walk you through the base configuration. The first thing you’re going to want to do is install it, which you achieve by clicking on the big blue “Add To Chrome” button on the right.
After the Remote Desktop extension finishes, go ahead and launch the app to do the initial setup and configuration.
Next you’re going to “authorize” this particular workstation to use the app, and also to allow access in general. Go ahead and authorize the computer as shown below.
Now click on the blue “Allow Access” button after authorizing your workstation.
Awesome! Now you can configure the “unattended access” portion of the extension, select the “Get Started” button under “My Computers.”
Now enable remote connections as shown below.
Next you’re prompted to a create a 6 digit PIN. Pick something you can easily remember, but that isn’t 123456 for example ;)
Now that you’ve set a PIN, test it out from another machine that has Chrome and the Remote Desktop Extension installed.
And it works like a charm! Anyone else notice the Escher type “mirror within a mirror” thing that’s going on here? That’s because I’m using a virtual machine running Chrome to test the Remote Access feature out ;)
